IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most popular English language test. More than 3 million IELTS tests were taken last year.

Taking IELTS opens doors – it can help you live, study and work around the world. More than 10,000 organisations worldwide accept IELTS, including government, academic, and employment institutions. In fact, IELTS is the only English language test accepted for immigration purposes by all countries that require one.

How do I pay for my IELTS test?

You can choose to pay for your test through the following methods:

  • pay online using Net Banking, E-wallets or Card (Visa, Visa electron, Master Card);
  • payment at ICICI bank branch (make cash payment at any ICICI bank branch by filling in the ICICI payment slip);
  • payment through Demand Draft (DD). The demand draft must be drawn in favour of the 'British Council' payable at Delhi.

Please note: Cash or credit/debit card payment for IELTS fees is not accepted at any of our offices.

Once you have made the payment, please send us the following documents to confirm your test booking:

Candidates who book their test through our online registration system and are paying online by Credit/Debit card must send:

  • No documents are required.

Candidates who book their test through our online registration system and are paying by cash at ICICI bank or through Demand Draft must send:

  • A copy of the IELTS Test application acknowledgment that they receive by email after registering online. 
  • Evidence of the payment (either the Demand Draft or the ‘acknowledged copy’ of the ICICI payment slip).
  • If paying at ICICI Bank, candidates are required to upload the deposit slip duly stamped and acknowledged by the ICICI bank in the Candidate Area of the Test Taker Portal within 3 days of registration.  
  • You will receive an automated email on your registered mail id in 3 working days. If you do not receive a confirmation email within 7 days from the date of upload of challan, please contact us immediately.

Candidates who book their test through the offline application form and are paying either by cash at ICICI bank or through Demand Draft must send:

  • The completed IELTS application form.
  • Evidence of the payment (either the Demand Draft or the ‘acknowledged copy’ of the ICICI payment slip).
  • If paying at ICICI Bank, candidates are required to upload the deposit slip duly stamped and acknowledged by the ICICI Bank in the Candidate Area of the Test Taker Portal within 3 days of registration.  
  • You will receive an automated email on your registered mail id in 3 working days. If you do not receive a confirmation email within 7 days from the date of upload of challan, please contact us immediately.

Please note: The documents must be received at our Gurgaon Office within two days from the day of registering for the test. This will enable us to confirm your booking.

What support is available if I have visual, hearing, speaking or learning needs?

The IELTS test has been designed to be a fair reflection of your English language skills. Your English language ability will be assessed objectively, regardless of any disability or special needs that you may have. We also make every effort to cater for all our special needs candidates. How long is an IELTS score valid?

An IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for two (2) years.

How soon can a candidate resit for the test?

A candidate can resit or take the IELTS test at any time

What is the minimum age limit for IELTS?

IELTS Test is not recommended for candidates under 16 years. 

How can I register for IELTS?

This is a step-by-step guide to book the IELTS computer-delivered & paper-based test. 

  1. Click the  “Take IELTS with British Council to visit the IELTS homepage. Click on the Book test link, placed at the top of the page. This link is also available in the panel on the right.
  2. Choose the test type IELTS (Academic or General training), IELTS for UK Visas & Immigration, or IELTS Life skills. 
  3. Select your country, test month, and click on the tab to choose a location. Select your preferred city and choose the test type- Paper-based or Computer-delivered. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click ‘search for tests’. This will show you the available test dates. Select the test date,  click on the selected location and choose this test.
  4. Choose your speaking slot.
  5. Register to create an account for British Council IELTS. (if you already have an account, you can simply log in. Please ensure that you mention your name identical to your passport.
  6. After logging in, click to “Book the test”. Fill in all your details and upload your ID. Please ensure that you carry your passport with you on the test day. Continue adding the rest of the required details and review your application.
  7. You can choose to send your TRF (Test Report Form) directly to the organisations or universities directly right now or later. We can send up to five free additional copies of your TRF to the organisations of your choice.
  8. Review your booking and proceed to pay.

You have an option to pay online right now through an internationally enabled credit card or debit card or payment wallet. Alternately you may pay at any ICICI bank branch using a customised ICICI deposit slip. You will find an option to download a copy of the deposit slip when you click to pay offline. After making the payment at the ICICI Bank, you can simply upload the scanned payment confirmation “British Council copy” of the ICICI deposit slip in the Test taker portal under the tab “Payment”. This must be done within one day from your registration date.

Can I update my personal details (gender, contact details, DOB, etc.) after I have registered?

Gender, Address, Phone number, and DOB details can be changed only up to 20 days prior to the exam date. The request has to be emailed to ExamsCustomerCare@britishcouncil.org.

I have entered the wrong passport number at the time of registration. How do I change it?

The passport number can be changed only up to 20 days prior to the exam date. The request has to be emailed to ExamsCustomerCare@britishcouncil.org

If the change is requested within 20 days of the exam date, the candidate may not be able to take the exam on the registered exam date and will have to take paid postponement to the next available date. Please complete the online postponement/date transfer form available at IELTS cancellation and refund policy. The request will be processed in 2 working days upon receipt of the postponement fees. 

I have booked the IELTS test but do not have the passport with me or my passport has expired. Will I be able to take the test?

You can use the passport if it is still valid and in your physical possession as on the date of your IELTS Test dates (LRW and Speaking). If validity has expired, you will need to reschedule your IELTS Exam as the passport is the only valid form of ID accepted for IELTS. Please click here for details 

Will I get the IELTS Speaking slot I chose during the registration?

It is our endeavour to offer the speaking slot chosen by the candidate, however given the current COVID situation, the speaking time slot being chosen by the candidates may not be available. Details of the test (venue, date, and time) are sent to the candidates 2 days prior to the test date on the registered email address and mobile number.

How can I change my speaking test date or slot for IELTS?

The schedule for speaking tests is system generated; hence we will not be able to accommodate requests for rescheduling speaking tests.

When will I receive venue details for my IELTS exam?

You will receive an email and SMS at your registered email ID and mobile number confirming your venue details and schedule of your IELTS, 2 days prior to the exam date.

When will I receive my IELTS results?

Pen and paper-based IELTS (PB IELTS): Results will be available online on the 13th day after the test date.

Computer-delivered IELTS (CD IELTS): Results will be available online within 3-5 days after the test date. 

 UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI): Results will be available online on the 13th day after the test date.

CD UKVI and Life Skills: Results will be available online on the 7th day after the test date.

Test Report Form (TRF) will be received by you within 10 days from the date of the result declaration if you have provided a complete and courier accessible address at the time of registration. For more information please click here.

My result is released, but I have not received my Test Result Form (TRF). What should I do?

If your result has been released, you will receive the TRF at your registered address within 10 days, provided it was a complete courier accessible address. In case, you have not received it, please write to us at ExamsCustomerCare@britishcouncil.org mentioning your IELTS registration number.

What happens if I am unable to appear for the test?

In the event a registered candidate fails to appear for their IELTS test, he/she is termed as absent and no refund is applicable to the candidate.

I want to send my IELTS scores to the Universities I am applying to; can the British Council help me?

We can send up to five free additional copies of your TRF directly to receiving organizations (viz. universities, immigration offices etc) you are applying to. If you would like us to do this, please include the relevant addresses when you book your test. These free TRF copies will be sent to the receiving organizations (RO) in 7 working days after the result declaration date and you will be notified via an SMS. Can I apply for the replacement of Test Report Form (TRF)?

Candidates are entitled to only one copy of the Test Report Form. You can avail another copy of the TRF if you have applied for Canadian Immigration and Citizenship and can provide us with the relevant documents. Please email your request with relevant documents at ExamsCustomerCare@britishcouncil.org.

I am not happy with my results. How can I get my IELTS test remarked (Enquiry on Results)?

It is unusual for there to be a mistake in the marking. However, if you did not receive the score you expected, you can apply for your test to be re-marked. This is called an Enquiry on Results (EOR). You can choose which test sections you want to be re-marked and will need to apply for the re-marking no later than six weeks after the test date.

Are answer sheets shown to the candidates if they opt for remarking/ Enquiry on Results (EOR)?

No. This term is agreed at the time of registering for an exam with us, 'I understand that the work I produce as part of the IELTS test remains the property of the IELTS Test Partners. Under no circumstances will it be released to candidates or to institutions or organisations, except in the investigation of suspected malpractice whereby the work I produce as part of the IELTS test may be provided to relevant authorities.

I had registered for the paper based IELTS test. Can I transfer myself to the computer delivered IELTS test now?

Yes, you can change from paper-based IELTS test to computer-delivered test now. Please write to ExamsCustomerCare@britishcouncil.org with your IELTS Registration number, passport number, city, current test date, and your preferred test date for Computer-delivered IELTS.
