Alison Barrett MBE is Country Director of the British Council in India, leading Arts and Culture, Education and English programmes delivered nationally through our four offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai. She also oversees delivery of key bilateral culture and education priorities under the India–UK Vision 2035.

Alison has spent over 28 years with the British Council in country, regional and global roles, much of it in the Asia Pacific. She lived and worked largely in India for 20 years between 1997–2016 and returned as Country Director in 2023. 

Her professional interests include transnational education, teacher development and language education. Outside work, she enjoys learning Hindi, practising yoga, chatting about books and exploring India’s cultural heritage.
