Art of debating and public speaking

11:00am to 4:00pm

Debating and public speaking are useful skills for life. Kids who learn to speak in public from an early age benefit themselves throughout their professional working lives. The ability to analyse and understand, to structure one’s speech, to present one's views to an audience, to listen, to see somebody else's point of view and the ability to build cohesive arguments are important skills for kids to develop.

Good speakers are able to change people's opinions and feelings, not just provide information. Kids can learn about these skills and know how to achieve them in the fun and engaging workshops on Art of debating and Public speaking.

The emphasis of the workshop is to learn about concepts through dialogue and questioning. No debate or public speaking experience is necessary!

Art of Debating

Debating is one of those important genres in public speaking which goes beyond transmitting information and involves motivating an audience or simply telling a story.

In this workshop, kids will analyse a debate based on the topic of life in Mars.

Upon completion of the workshop, kids will be able to:

  • apply effective critical thinking skills
  • plan, elaborate and put forward an argument
  • deconstruct and structure their response to the opposition’s argument
  • develop dialogue and conversational skills.

Upon completion of the workshop, kids will be able to:

  • brainstorm ideas on a topic
