Placement overview and structure

The British Library in collaboration with the British Council in India is offering two ‘Conservation for Digitisation’ placements at the British Library led by the British Library’s Conservation Centre in 2025.

The purpose of the placement is to offer the possibility to learn all aspects of ‘conservation for digitisation’ of library and archive material, by highly tailoring the sessions to the specific needs of their collections.

In addition, the placement aims to be a vehicle of learning opportunity for many other professionals in the field, by promoting the sharing of knowledge and skills gained by the participants with their colleagues from other institutions, for the benefit of many collections.

The placement is structured in two parts, plus a follow-up online session:

  • Weeks 1 and 2 will focus on all the main aspects of ‘conservation for digitisation’, highly tailored to the needs of the participants, highlighted by the selection questionnaire, and through discussions with the participant before and during the placement.
  • Week 3 is a revision week. The participants, after a couple of months spent in their institutions applying the content learned during the placement, will be back at the British Library. This week will offer the participants a unique opportunity to review what they learned during the first two weeks, and to focus on specific issues and clarifications they want to address. In addition, this week will focus on strengthening skills and knowledge on the topic. Finally, throughout the placement, participants will visit other departments and collaborate with some experts in the library who, together with conservators, are involved in the digitisation process, among them curators, imaging staff, etc.
  • A follow-up online session will happen one to two months after the end of the placement. The participants will be offered this session to further discuss issues they may have encountered, for clarifications and to share what they have implemented.
  • After completion of the placement the placement holders will complete an experience report.

The schedule of the placement will be shared with the participants after the participant selection process.
