One of the winning schools, Sudarshan Vidya Mandir expressed, “We, at Sudarshan Vidya Mandir, Bangalore, would like to call the International School Award as International School Awakening. It was indeed an awakening for us as we progressed with the various projects for the British Council International School Award Programme. Through this programme we could introspect, realize and inculcate the various aspects of our teaching.”
The award provides a platform for schools to produce a valuable framework to develop their international activities throughout the year. Schools which apply for the British Council International School Award involve themselves in a wide range of activities such as celebrating international theme days, comparative studies on current issues, local customs and traditions in India and other countries, collaborative production of plays, exchange visits with partner schools in UK and forming links between students.
About British Council’s International School Awards
British Council International School Award is an accreditation scheme that recognises and celebrates finest practice of internationalism in schools. The award provides a platform for schools to produce a valuable framework to develop their international activities throughout the year.
Introduced first in the UK in 1999, British Council International School Award provides a framework for developing international dimension as a 'whole school' commitment and recognises good practice in developing teachers and students as global citizens. Schools that apply for British Council International School Award formulate an action plan, implement the international activities during the course of the academic year and finally submit a portfolio of evidence that is assessed against specific criteria.
India was the first country outside the UK to launch the International School Award. From a mere five schools in 2003 to over one thousand five hundred schools in 2015, the International School Award in India has been one of the most successful school programmes. The ethos of multiculturalism that international dimension brings to education lies at the core of British Council’s work. Indian schools have embraced the inclusive and supportive nature of the International School Award whole heartedly.
This year there is a new edition of the International School Award in India as we now offer three levels – Foundation certificate, Intermediate certificate and full award. We hope that this will help schools that have not yet reached the full award level to start out with confidence and take the journey step by step.
