Mandakini is trained as an academic painter from the Delhi College of Arts which introduced her to a new world. The essence of her work is exploratory because of readily available and mobile recording devices. Global women artists have inspired her to delve into concepts related to gender and identity.

This artwork began as an exploration of the ideas revolving around fertility. Fertility not being restricted to the notion of womanhood, rather fertility in terms of nature and the primordial origins of society as we have come to understand. From the title - let there be light- artwork is a direct reference to the idea of stained-glass paintings found in churches and cathedrals in Europe.
