Agra-born, London-based multidisciplinary artist, Sonakshi navigates the interplay of craft and memory through painting, enameling, gemology, and metalwork. Her practice is an evolving inquiry into intricacy and colour as vessels of cultural resonance, seeking to unravel cross-border dialogues on gender identity and material memory within the postcolonial Indian subcontinent.
About the Artwork
Zaat
Mix media sculptural objects (3D) - 2024
Zaat fractures the homogenising hegemony that confines women to inherited roles: bride, mother, grandmother. Rooted in nostalgia for time with my female ancestors, it lingers in the quiet dissonance between collective pride and personal erasure—where desire dulled into duty. What unfolds is a matrilineal legacy of not just material possessions, but withheld longings and individual wisdom associated with them, rarely given space in history.
