Cancelling your IELTS test
You can cancel your IELTS test up to five weeks before the test date.
The IELTS test fee is refundable, after deduction of a cancellation/postponement fee, if an original medical certificate confirming illness and stating your inability to appear for the test on the scheduled test date is provided within five days of the test date, together with the Application form for postponement or cancellation of IELTS.
Only evidence of serious illness will be considered. Only original medical certificates in local language or English are accepted. We recommend sending medical certificates by registered mail. We will also consider your request to postpone or cancel your test due to the bereavement of a close family member or hardship/trauma. However, a valid evidence is required for an exemption to be made.
To cancel your test date, please download and complete our Application form for postponement or cancellation of IELTS and send it to us along with the appropriate documents and/or evidence no later than five days within the test date via post / courier to our Gurgaon Office or email to ExamsCustomerCare@britishcouncil.org (please note that you need to sign the form). You can find the form below in the download section. Documents accepted include a medical certificate from a qualified medical practitioner, a death certificate or a police report.
Copies sent by fax or email are not accepted. Please note that we also do not accept sick notes issued by family members.
Requesting a test day transfer
If you need to change the date of your test from the date you originally booked, you can request a test day transfer up to five weeks before the test date after deduction of cancellation/postponement fee.
Please note that the new test date must be within three months of the original date. In cases of illness, transfer is possible within five weeks of the test if an original medical certificate is provided within five working days of the test date, together with the Application form for postponement or cancellation of IELTS.
You are only allowed to transfer your test date once. If you receive a transfer to a new test date (either before the test or due to illness) and are ill on the second test date, then you are not entitled to a refund of the test fee nor to any further transfer to a new test date.
Refund of the test fees will be done through the following modes for request for cancellation test date or test date transfer:
- Fee paid online will be refunded to the bank account that was used for making online payments.
- Fee paid at ICICI bank will be refunded via NEFT (a copy of cancelled cheque is required to be submitted along with the Application form for postponement or cancellation).
If the application is approved, the test centre will refund the amount in the account number mentioned on the application form.
Please note that refunds can take three to four weeks to process.
Your IELTS test fees will stand forfeited under the following conditions:
- If we do not receive both, the Application form for postponement or cancellation of IELTS along with the supporting documents, at our office in Gurgaon by the fifth working day after the test, you will be marked as absent and forfeit all claims
- If you have paid for your IELTS test through ICICI Bank, but do not complete your registration for the test (with us) within three months of the date of payment of the test fee, the full test fee will be forfeited and we will not be able to grant a refund or fee adjustment against any future test date.
