Join us for a book talk by legendary rock and pop manager and author of bestselling books on pop music Simon Napier-Bell in conversation with Zac O’Yeah.
about the author
Simon Napier-Bell is one of the greatest pop managers in music history. Initially, he had wanted to become a jazz musician, but history had different plans for him. Since the mid-1960s he has managed superstar bands and artists such as Yardbirds, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Marc Bolan (whom he discovered) and T Rex, Japan, Asia, Ultravox, Boney M, and so on, and he of course made Wham! into the biggest pop act of the 1980s. Furthermore, he co-wrote the song You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me which became a global superhit for Dusty Springfield and later Elvis Presley. Although he still has a massively popular rock show running in Las Vegas, he is nowadays focusing on producing films and writing the inside history of the global music business – books about creativity and madness, drugs, greed, corruption and crass commercialism, but also the fun of it all and the beauty of good art – which has resulted in hilarious and enlightening non-fiction books such as the music business memoir You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, the inside story of Wham! I’m Coming To Take You To Lunch: A Fantastic Tale Of Boys, Booze And How Wham! Were Sold to China, a book analyzing what drives the music industry, Black Vinyl, White Powder, and most recently a comprehensive history of the pop music industry from its origins to the present, Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay: The Business of Popular Music. He is also one of the world’s most entertaining public speakers and an evening with him will leave you with memories for life.
What they say about him: “A one-stop-shop education in what the music-business has always been about” (The Independent); “Compelling and authoritative” (Times Literary Supplement); “Gloriously rude” (The Spectator); “Scurrilous” (Daily Mirror); “A brilliant storyteller” (Rainbow Network).
