The Reading Challenge for adults aims to foster a love for reading, create a sense of community among book enthusiasts, and enhance participants’ skills in writing book reviews. The challenge spans 4 weeks and includes diverse reading prompts to engage participants. Additionally, two sessions on writing book reviews will be conducted to improve critical reading and writing abilities.

Why participate? Reading has a proven history to -

  • Mental Wellbeing: Reading opens doors to new worlds, provides entertainment, boosts imagination, and has positive neurological and psychological benefits.
  • Set reading goals: The challenge helps you set specific reading goals. Even if you don’t meet your goal, you’ll likely read more than without the challenge.
  • Discover new authors: Explore fresh voices and expand your reading horizons through recommended book lists.
  • Be an inspiration: By participating, you inspire others to read and can casually mention your impressive book count at social gatherings.
  • Learn About Yourself: Reading exposes you to different perspectives and situations. Whether through self-improvement books or fiction characters, it’s a chance to learn more about yourself.

How It Works:

  • Participants register and receive a list of 20 challenge prompts. Reading challenge prompts are simple challenges that give you a starting point for choosing a book. It’s a great way to add an element of fun and excitement to your typical reading routine.
  • Read a minimum of 5 books from our physical collection in 4 weeks.
  • Attend two book review sessions and log the books read in a provided reading log.
  • Submit minimum 3 book reviews from the list of books read which will be assessed. 
  • Successful participants receive a medal and certificate of on successful completion.

Additional Details:

  • Register online or at the British Council in Kolkata.
  • Open to members and non-members and for audience who are18+ years of age.
  • Borrow a minimum 5 books simultaneously.
  • Books must be selected from challenge prompts only.

Important Dates:

  • Last date to register: Friday, July 19
  • Reading Challenge period: July 20 to August 17. Books must be returned on or before 17 August.
  • Book review sessions: Saturday, 27 July and Saturday, 3 August 2024 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Review submission dates: August 19–26
  • Certificate and medal distribution: First week of September

Fee:

Member fee Rs 800. Click to register

Non-member fee Rs 1200. Click to register

Fee includes membership card, welcome kit, book review sessions, training materials, certificate, and medal. 

This registration will be towards Reading Challenge Membership which will enable the participation in the event.
