IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the most popular official English Exam worldwide, for work and study abroad. It is also the only exam accepted by all countries for the purposes of immigration.

Skills for IELTS is a preparatory course delivered face to face in class and designed to maximise your chances of success on test day by equipping you with the strategies you need to succeed. The British Council is a co-owner of IELTS, so we are ideally placed to help you get the result you deserve.

Skills for IELTS is delivered face-to-face by British Council IELTS Experts – British Council qualified teachers who know the test inside out and can guide you extensively. Your teacher will coach you in applying strategies and techniques which are sure to maximise your IELTS score.  

Complete flexibility

Skills for IELTS is a flexible preparation approach that allows you to be in complete control of your learning. Designed for students who may not have much time but still need effective preparation or for those who want to study as intensively as they like. It offers you the flexibility of choosing not only the parts of the exam you wish to focus upon but also the lesson day, time, location (Delhi, Chennai & Kolkata) and teacher that best suit your needs. 

What you will get:

  • have IELTS consultation session with an IELTS expert at the beginning of your IELTS journey to better understand where you are and how to get to where you need to be
  • practise listening, speaking, reading, and writing in class
  • get free access to our well-resourced Information Centre and a wide range of up-to-date self-study materials to help you prepare for the test.
  • ascertain level of readiness for the IELTS exam through a Mock Test
  • experience a real simulation of the IELTS pen and paper Test
  • have 1-1 tutorial with IELTS expert at key points in your studies to understand how you are doing and what you need to focus on
  • receive two writing feedback to improve your writing by doing additional writing tasks and submitting them for expert feedback.
  • gain increased confidence before taking the general and academic module of the IELTS test
  • develop an awareness of the most useful techniques for answering questions in the IELTS test and learn how to maximise your band score

How does Skills for IELTS work?

Skills for IELTS allows you to build your timetable and learn at the pace you want by allowing you to construct a schedule on the online booking system (OBS) where you can build your personal profile and track your progress.Everything is managed in your Skills for IELTS profile, from there you can choose: 

  • the centre you want to attend
  • your timetable
  • the subject of the class
  • your teacher

All you must do is book the classes you'd like to attend using your credits, and go to your chosen centre

Credit packages

1 credit = 1 class = 90 minutes

The main credit packs are as follows:

We encourage you to book and attend a complimentary orientation session before starting classes. This orientation session is not included in the credits purchased.

How to register

Step 1 Ascertain your level of English (Refer to the easy self-assessment method below). Identify whether you are at  Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, or an Advanced level.

Step 2 Go to the online registration link here

Step 3 Add your personal details

Step 4 Choose the courses of your choice, English level as well as credit package. (1 credit is equal to 1 class which is 90 minutes in duration. Know more about our Credit package system below.)

Step 5 Submit your details and make payment online.

Step 6 After your payment has been processed successfully, you will receive a confirmation email on the same, followed by an activation and email verification email for the online student portal. Student portal is an online booking system(OBS) that allows you to build your class schedule, choose your teachers, select, book and cancel classes as well as track your progress) (Know more below)

Step 7 After activation,  please proceed to create your personal profile on the myClass portal. Please watch this video for a step-by-step guide.

Ascertaining your level to register

  • You are an Intermediate level(B1) if you can share your thoughts, opinions, and views. For example: She must be really tired. She’s worked late every night this week.
  • You are at Upper intermediate level(B2) if you can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to your field of interest. For example: Unfortunately for him, the situation turned out to be opposite to what he thought it was
  • You are at Advanced level(C1) if you can present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects. For example: Being born and raised in India, I believe her to be the country’s best ambassador in the world

Please note that our Skills for IELTS registrations are accepted for intermediate and above levels only.

  • Skills for IELTS Listening – in this module you will be equipped with listening strategies such as predicting information, identifying synonyms and antonyms and dealing with distracting information, in order to correctly answer all IELTS Listening question types.
  • Skills for IELTS Reading – in this module you will learn how to apply reading skills such as skimming and scanning, and techniques such as identifying synonyms and antonyms to tackle all IELTS Reading question types.
  • Skills for IELTS Writing Academic – in this module you will encounter a comprehensive set of activities to maximise your score on IELTS Writing Task 1 and 2. You will learn how to identify key features and fully respond to the task prompt in order to meet expectations for Task Achievement, as well as improve your grammar and vocabulary.
  • Skills for IELTS Writing General Training — in this part of the module you will complete a comprehensive set of activities designed to address the specific requirements of the IELTS General Training test. For Task 1, you will improve your ability to write personal letters using an appropriate tone, and a range of fully connected sentences. For Task 2, you will develop your ability to write an appropriate essay in response to a question. You will learn to fully respond to the question in order to achieve your best possible result.
  • Skills for IELTS Speaking – in this module you will take part in speaking tasks and activities designed to maximise your score across all four assessment criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.
