As Director North India, Tom leads the organisation’s education and culture work across the northern States of India and works to establish partnerships so extendBritish Council’s impactful work in this part of the country. By leading the teams in Delhi and Chandigarh offices, Tom oversees state level education and culture programmes that support young people to maximise their talents and bring new opportunities to millions of people in India.
Tom joined the India team two years ago from Johannesburg where he spent three years as Deputy Director South Africa and Director Namibia. There he took responsibility for the English and Exams including a national teacher training programme with the country’s Department of Basic Education. He also took a lead on establishing more innovative, technology-driven practice in operations and projects, helping establish more efficient working styles and in-demand skills training for our beneficiaries. He is particularly proud of Digify Bytes, a project he established that has helped more than 70,000 young people in Africa gain essential digital skills to launch their career.
Prior to this, he spent his time in London working on strategy and government relations.
